I have not worked on my ar15 a lot. I am having trouble with the charging handle. Sometimes it pulls all the way and sometimes it sticks and I cannot pull it out fully. Any suggestions? I disassembled, cleaned and oiled. No luck.
Thanks, Corey823 |

If not, then remove the upper and see if the charging handle has smooth movement. If it does, then inspect the lower. Remove the buffer and spring and check for any obstructions in the tube or physical damage to the components. Clean if necessary. Check the condition of the hammer and function check the lower. Just don't let the hammer fall against the receiver. Apply finger pressure against while releasing it to prevent this from happening. Repeat several times to ensure that the hammer is engaging correctly, without excessive resistance. This will eliminate the possibility that the bolt is binding on the hammer due to a FCG issue |

I won't take any advice the wrong way. I checked all the components. What is an FCG issue? There is some play (up and down) in the charging handle. I have ordered a new one. Thanks for the suggestions. FCG stands for Fire Control Group (trigger, hammer, disconnector, selector etc..). When you pull back the charging handle, are you pulling it straight back without pulling it upwards or to one side at the same time? |

Standard charging handles don't last very long if you are not careful to pull straight back while holding onto both sides. You don't have a scope on it by chance do you? Take the charge handle out and check against a straightedge for bending, nicks or dents. For three times the price you can get one that is made from a better grade of aluminum.
Some other long shots might include: Try puling it open without the magazine. Magazines are the first culprit if something acts up. Look inside the upper receiver for any markings that indicate something might be getting hung up. Check for debris in the buffer tube (make sure to read up on it before taking it apart). |

Sometimes if you have a telestock the lock plate at the rear of the lower can stick up too high and the handle will hang on the top edge of the plate and not pull rearward but a small amount.
Also there were some handles out a few years ago the the front portion was short and would slip over top of the notch on the front of the carrier and hang up when you pulled back on hte handle. |

The charging handle pulls the B/C back via the flat section of the Carrier in front of the gas key, and if the handle and carrier are not interacting correctly, it possible for the hook on the charging handle to climb up past the carrier flat, and cause this kind of binding. Also would help to know the butt stock in play, since if you have a A-1 butt stock, and using a A-2 butt stock bolt, then the bolt will be 5/8" too long and protruding into the back of the receiver extension void. If a telescoping stock, could have a full stock recoil spring in play, and it's coil binding out before the buffer can be drawn all the way back. On the recoil spring, 11.75" for fixed butt stock/receiver extension, while on telescoping butt stocks/receiver extensions, should in the 10.5" range. |
