So took my newly assembled AR to the range and I insert the magazine (Magpul) and the first round fires. The gun ejects the spent casing and loads a new round, but when I go to pull the trigger the gun does not fire. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

The ever classic backwards install of the hammer spring?

If your hammer has gone forward, but didn't have enough energy to strike/ignite the primer......Reinstall the hammer spring correctly.

Should look like this one,

That was my first thought- I will have to pull apart tonight.

Any other thoughts if it isn't that?

Thanks man!

If the hammer has gone forward but not caused the chambered round to fire,,,check:
- Hammer spring installed backwards. Reinstall the hammer spring correctly.
-Disconnector not catching, allows the hammer to follow the bolt carrier forward. Check for propper disco spring install and free movement of the disco. Do a function check to ensure parts are working properly.
-Debris like a popped/loose primer inside the trigger group that prevents normal movement of the parts. Check for junk in the receiver, then do a function check to ensure parts are working properly.

The hammer spring is the most common, but the other stuff may happen.
