Ok, I could use a little help and direction here.
I have a Bushmaster Varminter 5.56 / .223 which is about  4 years old. A relatively accurate weapon but will on occasion suffer a failure to feed issue, with either not chambering the next round or jamming a round in a weird angle. I have used a variety of ammo, with the problem seemingly more apparent when using bulk Fiocchi rounds.
I sent the upper back to Bushmaster and they did something with the gas block and polished the feed ramps. The gun worked perfectly until recently.
The recent manifestation is a distnict failure to feed. After charging, the weapon will not feed the next round. Once that round is charged, it works flawlessly.
I would appreciate any direction here - is it  a gas tube issue, port issue, gas block issue or ammo issue.

Best guess, ammo related (read a little under powered, and the rifle semi short stroking).

How would you fix semi-short stroking?

Also, how would you determine semi-short stroking is the problem?

I'm not disagreeing, just curious.

Thanks

When the rifle starts to act up, single load a single round into a mag, charge and fire that round, and see if the bolt locks back.

With the rifle clean and lubed from the start, it should run fine, but as it starts to foul up a bit, under power ammo is going to have problem correctly stroking the rifle once it starts to foul up a bit, and will show up in this quick test.

As for the fix, will come down to relubing, and maybe even have to pull the rifle down and re-clean it more often when shooting such ammo.

Check to make sure your gas key is tight, and properly staked.  A loose gas key can result in a gas leak, which can cause the gun to short stroke.
