So I'm beyond frustrated at the moment and need help. Got a good deal on a dpms lower 6 or 7 months ago. Decided to sell a gun to a friend and would rather sell it with that lower than my spikes that's on it now. Probmem is the castle nut won't budge, I've oiled it, nothing, extra pair of hands nothing. A quick search here says they loctite them on and use a heatgun, problem is I don't have one, also no handy torch here as I live in an apt so I keep everything at my dads in his garage.

So before I go to Lowes tomorrow and get a torch (which I'm not even sure will work) are there other ways to do this?

If it's on with good loctite, you'll absolutely, positively, have to use a torch to break it down before that sucker will come off.

A $25 propane torch should do the trick.

If that's all it takes OK, but if I buy a torch to heat thing and it won't break loose I'm going to be more than pissed off. I just can't see why it'd be loctited but that's what the folks said when I searched it. Definetly not staked

Have you checked into Renting a heat gun for a few hours? I wouldn't think it would cost much.

What are you trying to usebto take it off?

If you get a propper castle nut tool lock the lower it in a vise and hit the tool with a rubber mallet it should be more then enough to get it off

It's not staked is it?

I doubt that would matter.

OP, buy the RRA style wrench that engages the the castle nut at 3 points.

ETA:  You are securing the lower in a vice, correct?

I usually heat it up then I don't use the wrench I use a punch and a hammer on one of the lugs until I break it loose and then I replace the castle nut...... Its easier to use the punch than screw up your hands when the wrench lets go of the lugs....But be ready to have a new nut.  Also I use break her loose over night on some really stubborn items and it always looks better the next day...

same little 3 pronged wrench I've used since the one divit type of stock nut stopped being so popular. Oh well off to home depot to try a torch

If you have an oven, I would use that and a pair of heavy leather gloves to handle the lower. I had a rail that had a lock ring that was "Lock-tite"'d on that required this. I heated it up to around 300 degrees for 5-10 minutes, then promptly removed it from the oven, threw it on my vice, and took my wrench to it and it came loose.

I'd like to thank y'all, bought a torch and worked just like the other thread said. Just with a small torch instead of a heat gun. Cracked and cracked, when it stopped cracking it twisted off. Thanks again
