My Colt Sporter lightweight will double fire quite regualrly the weapon is stock and has not been modified. it will fire on the trigger pull and then again on the trigger release and i dont know what is causing this. Could it be a worn out disconnector? whatever it is its kindof scary as you never know when it will decide to do it. sometimes i will shoot an entire mag without it malfunctioning and sometimes it will double fire two to three times in a mag. it double fires under slow, controlled shooting. Has anyone had any experience with this happening? Please help!

Disconnector is bad. Disconnector spring missing?

Either way, get it fixed.

disconnector spring is present. so you think its just a worn disconnector that isnt catching the hammer?

Yep, first look at the disconnector to see if it is catching the hammer.

As the disconnector releases from the rear hammer hook, it "passes" to the trigger. The nose of the trigger interacts with the bottom of the hammer to catch.

If the trigger/hammer/disconnector is somehow not doing their jobs correctly, you can experience doubling.

Take the rifle apart, and work with the lower receiver. NO AMMO of course.

You just have to manually set and release the hammer, looking at how it is acting in concert with the trigger and disconnector. Look for wear and if the parts do not catch and pass to eachother.

Is the disconnector spring in the correct way? .... fat end down inside of the trigger.

spring is in right with the bigger end down in the trigger. I went to the shop today to try and get a colt spec disconnector but to no avail.

If the disco sear is still sharp and clean, Start off with replacing the disco spring first.

As for it that does not solve the problem, and again, the disco is still clean, and the correct pin size along with the rest of the FCG as well, then there is the option of retiming the disco as well.

With the trigger at rest, lower the hammer back until the the back hammer sear and the disco sear are as close as possable.  your looking for a free gap between them of around .001 to .003 (about as thick as a human hair).  If you find the gap to be too great, then you remove metal from the bottom front of the disco where it seats against the top/front of the trigger.

Go slowly and test alone the way, but with the disco correctly times, it will retain the hammer on trigger release/rest until the front trigger sear can get in the correct position to catch the hammer on disco release.

anyone know where a good place is to get big pin colt trigger asseblies? Obviously you can find small pin kits everywhere but the big pin has been a little tougher to come across. I am in the portland area but ordering is also an option.

I would just re-time per Dano's instructions. I had to do this with a Bill Springfield trigger job that I bought from a buddy.
