I'm not exactly sure what short stroking is, but it may be what I am experiencing. When I shoot a round it fires fine, but then I get a click. When I check, the empty brass is still in the chamber and there hasn't tried to get the next round from the mag. I've tried several mags and am using m855 green tips.
The upper is from Stag, and I built the lower using a RRA lpk. It seems to me that it doesn't have enough power to move the bolt back far enough to grab the next round out of the mag. It worked for a while, now it only works 1 out of 10 or so, but I haven't shot it much to determine if that is the ratio or not. Help??? |

Short stroking is the action not stroking enough so the buffer makes it all the way back in the receiver extension tube for the bolt to be locked back on the catch if there was no more rounds in the mag.
So, I will need details on the rifle, such as if it is using a stock front sight base, or a gas block. On the lower side, does it have a full stock, or telescoping one, and the length of the buffer, and the free length of the buffer spring as well. On the upper end, could be that the gas passage is blocked if the gas block was not set correctly, to even a leaking key to the carrier. On the lower end, wrong buffer and spring in play such as in a telescoping stock, or even the butt stock screw too long and liming the amount that the Bolt face can come back. If you want to short cut checking the lower, then pull back on the charging handle, and confirm that the face of the bolt stop short about 1/4" from the back of the ejection port, and the last inch or so of the charging handle pull is no greater in tension that say from about half way back (the point in which the hammer is cocked back). Lastly, need to know how and what you have been cleaning and lubing the rifle with. Some cleaning solvents and method do a less than ideal job, and even worse, when they mix with CLP, leave a gooey mess that just causes problems from the start. Also, did the rifle run fine at one point, and this is new problem, or is a problem from the start of rifle life? |

First a couple or questions what kind of ammo are you shooting and what buffer are you running?
Leaving spent casings in the chamber is usually attributed to a weak extractor spring or a very dirty chamber not letting the extractor do it's job. The not loading the next round is short stroking but could also be connected to the dirty chamber slowing the BCG down because it's working to hard trying to extract the spent casing but ends up being pulled off the rim of the case because the casing is bonded to the walls of the dirty chamber. I would clean the rifle really good paying special attention to the chamber and BCG ... also while the BCG is out check your extractor to make sure it is functioning properly. Couple of other things to check also is the gas key on the carrier to make sure the screws are still tight and check you gas tube to carrier key alignment by inserting the carrier without the bolt and see if there is any resistance when they meet as that can cause drag. |
