Well, I have a AR chambered in 5.45. I have put it together a while ago with SS barrel made by Citadel. I fired about 300 rounds though it and decided that I do not want the SS barrel. Then I bought a parkerized one from the same manufacturer. And ended up re-using the old bolt.
Well I literaly put 1 magazine though the rifle when I realized I had a broken extractor.
I looked at every single casing and pretty much all of them look like this:

Do you notice that deformed ring at the base? What is the cause of that.

By the way here is my defected extractor...

What do you think caused the extractor to brake? I ordered 2 spare extractors from MidwestUSA with a hope of not having to replace this thing again.....

I just came from an AK platform hence 5.45x39 caliber. And I am quite dissapointed with this faulty bolt.. Hope it does not happen again.

However my question stands: What do you think caused this? What is the issue at hand? What should I do to prevent this from happening again?

Poor manufacturing or material choices on the part of the manufacturer.

The 5.45 extractor is different than the 5.56 one... which replacements did you order?

I ordered 5.56..  Whats the difference? Can I modify them myself?

What type of bolt were you using in the first place?

Most likely Model 1 Sales, though it's hard to say. Not too many suppliers of 5.45 bolts, and only one has a bad reputation.

You might contact Spike's Tactical or S&W and see if they'll sell you extractors/bolts.

I would not bother with modifying a 5.56 extractor.

I am interested in this as I have just assembled a 545 using the same manufacturer's barrel and bolt combo and have experienced consistent failures to eject/extract....

how much work is involved in modifying a 5.56 extractor.... It cant be a really involved process?
The reason I am asking is that I want a better extractor then the POS one I had...

The 'ring' around the case just in front of the web is normal.  You will see this on all cases, even brass, if you look.  It is where the case expands to the chamber wall but as the case thickens, near the web, it does not expand as much and you don't want it to expand past that 'ring' area.

Get an ARPerformance super bolt ($99) and never look back.  The ARP barrel and bolt combo, $279, runs like a sewing machine on my rifle and you are not going to break their bolt or extractor.
