Hey guys, my AR is having problems feeding new rounds. When I load a round into the chamber it scratches the brass and gashes the slug pretty good. Other times the charging handle gets lodge and wont budge. Any ideas what could be the problem? I recently installed an Adams Arms piston could that be the problem?

Can you supply pictures?

For some reason my camera doesn't want to work for me right now so ill try later, but for the slug the gash starts exactly at the tip goes straight down for a few millimeters and twists to the right. For the brass the scratches go in straight parallel lines to the base of the brass.

Did it just start after the AA piston install?

How do you know that it is slashing the slug when you're chambering it? unless you can see the bullet before you eject it (which you can't) It is probably damaging the bullet when you are ejecting the round.

The ejector is camming the bullet against the barrel extension causing the gouging when you are extracting the live round. The bullet is probably not being scratched when you are chambering...hence it's still "pristine" when you shoot it.

As far as the bolt not closing...are you riding the charging handle when chambering the round or just letting it fly home under full spring tension the way it's supposed to be done? If it's the charging handle getting stuck, don't know what's going on there.

odfox-Yes it didn't have this problem before the AA piston, but I have almost ruled that out as the reason.

kbad- I'm just letting it fly. I assumed that it was being gouged when it was feeding since sometimes it jams while feeding, and the bolt carrier doesn't fully close. Thinking that its pressing against the barrel extension while being loaded.

Copy. I would try different mags if you haven't already

In addition to the mags mentioned above, I'd check your piston install, especially the receiver buffer.  Also, if you changed handguards/barrel nut during the piston install, eyeball your barrel extension alignment with your upper receiver and finally, check your feed ramps (does receiver have M4 feed ramps, if so is barrel lacking them?  should have turned up before you ever installed a piston system).

Beyond that, even if it has nothing to do with the AA piston and you are sure it turned up after the install, call them and ask them if they've ever heard of it.

Well I have tried different mags the problem still exist. The receiver does have good M4 ramps and everything seems to be aligned correctly. Im starting to think KBAD is correct with the ejector cramming the bullet against the extension, and I have just never noticed until recently.

I have a rifle that does the same depending on how dry/dirty it is. It jams on the right side only, due to sharp edges on the barrel extension lug cutout above the ramp grabbing the bullet sides on the way in. It has jammed with seven different mags and three different brands of ammo.

Try shotgunning your rifle open and removing the bolt carrier. Take a live round and ease it up the ramps by hand and see if it wants to hang in the square cutouts. Mine will leave impressive gouges in the bullet sides with heavy finger pressure. During live fire I've had a few bullets crammed back into the case, so I'm careful when shooting non-crimped stuff.

Also, you can eliminate the extractor/ejector scratches by holding the round square on the bolt face while slowly ejecting it from the chamber.
