Ran into a problem the other day at the range. I was shooting groups off the bench with my POF that I was sighting in to take to the MGM Ironman. It has had a Timney trigger for several years which has functioned perfectly through a number of 3 gun matches and a couple or 3 k rounds.

Anyway, as I touched off one round, the rifle doubled. I noticed that the safety wouldn't engage, and when I opened the action a loaded round popped out. The hammer had either followed the bolt carrier forward, or the sear had been tripped before the bolt was in battery.

Assuming that this may have been caused by a bump fire as I was slowly pressing the trigger, I continued shooting, making sure that I followed through on the trigger. I fired about 20 more rounds with no recurrence of the problem.

My question is, is it likely that this was caused by a bump fire as I was very slowly increasing pressure on the trigger? Or is the trigger in need of warranty work? I don't want this to happen during the Ironman match. Would I be pretty safe continuing to use that trigger, or would I be better off pulling a trigger out of another gun (or just swipe out lowers)?

Anyone familiar with this problem?

Best guess, bump fire.

I called Timney today, and they say this is common with the early generation of AR triggers. Apparently the disconnector set screw backs out, despite the Loctite. Anyway, it's going back to Timney for an exchange for a new one with a lock nut on the set screw.

I had the same thing happen a year ago. Got a replacement with the lock nut and haven't had a problem since.
