My buffer stop pin is bent forward.  I can freely rotate it but it makes it way back to facing forward.  I have not used the rifle since I noticed it.  The action cycles.  Do I need to replace this asp or will it be ok?

Your rifle will work without it, but it when broken its more difficult to take apart the rifle for maintenance.

The right thing to do is replace the part. If it completely breaks while firing,,,,,may cause damage or a malfunction.

Buffer retaining pin, and it should have not bent in the first place, but if struck hard enough to bend it, should have cracked off.
It's a quick fix for the most part(receiver extension retains it), but if you have a factory built rifle, then let them replace it for free.

But now the question in play, what does the very outer surface edge of your buffer look like?  If it's all denting to hell, then you have a receiver out of spec, being that buffer retainer channel/hole was drilled too far back, and when the upper is locked home, the carrier is not pushing/retaining the buffer from making contact with the pin during cycling.

If only a dent or two, then the pin got bent as you where opening the upper, or allowed the buffer to crash into the retaining pin during such upper open times.
