On a J&T A2 carbine upper assembly I have had for about a year now I just noticed the forward assist does not work. With the bolt and charging handle out I can see that the FA when pushed in does not come forward to contact the bolt carrier. When I compare it to another upper that the FA works on I noticed that on the working FA the finger comes forward as the FA is pushed in. With the FA pushed in you can barrely feel the end of it protruding on the inside of the receiver. I have not tried changing the FA yet. I never use the FA, but it would be nice if it worked, as now that I know it bothers me. Is the FA defective or is there something wrong with the receiver?

Drive the upper receiver FA roll pin out of the receiver (pin 21) and check the parts.

Could be that the FA pawn spring is missing, or even the main cross pin driven in wrong and not across the relief slot for it on the assist, binding it up from being pushed all the way in.

I have had it apart and the pawn spring is there. I did not check to see if pin was causing it to bind though. I will check that next. It seemed to me that the (for lack of the correct term) finger was not machined to allow the outward movement needed to engage the carrier. The whole assembly moves forward but there is no outward movment of the finger.

J&T is really good about replacing defective parts.

Give them a call and chances are they will send you a complete forward assist assembly with the main spring and pin the same day you call them.
