I was out shooting today and had about six rounds out of the rifle. When I pulled the trigger on round seveb I just got a click. I checked my rifle and found it out of battery. Could not pull charging handle back to clear round in chamber. Had to remove takedown pins to get upper off of lower. Removed carrier and found bolt stuck in carrier. Finally extracted bolt from carrier and found gas ring peened over side of groove towart front of bolt. Possible causes and solutions?

When you go to install the bolt into the carrier, gently insert it to allow the gas rings to compress, instead of peening over when jammed in.
If that is not the problem, then get the manufacture on the horn and have him replace the carrier. Chances are the reduction entry to the gas section on the bolt was milled too far back, and as the bolt unlocks, the ring is escaping the reduced section, and when the bolt goes to lock back up, that is when the ring is catching the reducing taper section at the front of the gas chamber section. |
| The bolt went in ok when I put the rifle together. The bolt was free in the carrier, there were no hang ups. I was also running the rifle wet too. I was thingking maybe the machining on the inside of the carrier might be rough. Would that make sense and could I possibly polish/smooth it out? |

Seat the bolt all the way in, then pull the bolt all the way out against the cam (mark the bolt against the front of the carrier).
Now using the mark, depth mic the beginning taper of the gas section in the carrier against the bolt ring channel it's self on the bolt from the mark you made. If you find that the taper not proud of the bolt mark depth by 10's of thousands of a inch, you fitting a losing battle, since the rings are no longer being retained in the gas section of the carrier at unlock, but allowing to swell out into the larger bolt area of the channel instead. Could be a bad bolt, a bad carrier, or the combo of the two if the gas rings are not being retained in the tighter small OD gas channel of the carrier when the bolt goes to unlock. Either way, if such is found to be out of spec, any of the manufacturers will replace the defective B/C without a second thought. |
