I have been troubleshooting a failure 80% of the time to catch the bolt on the final round of a mag. 99% ruled out the mags. I was reading on here about spring length and saw something wierd:

I have an a2 buttstock, and the spring is 12.5" long and the buffer is 5" and 15/16ths.

The spring seems long based on what I have read. Also, the buffer has some black marks on it (back end) as if it was hitting the buffer tube when it was being sent back. Anything odd here?

A-2 stock/receiver extension uses a standard buffer (around 5 7/8") and the spring for such should be around 11.75 (again, your is close enough).

On the black marks on the buffer bumper, is the mark the centered on the center of the bumper, and about the size of the butt stock screw.  Is so, could that either the butt stock bolt is long, or the receiver extension spacer was not install, both causing the tip of the butt stock screw now to be protruding into the back of the tube, limiting the amount that the buffer would fully retract normally.

If the black mark is across the entire face of the buffer bumper, then while pulling the charging handle all the way back, how far from the back of the port does the bolt face retract to?  1/4" to 3/8" for the face of the bolt to the back of the ejection port is ideal, which means the the face of the back is clearing the bolt catch ideal as well.

Last question, when you fire a round, is the distances of the spent case around 10' to 15' out of the ejection port, or much, much less than that?
