With bolt catch problems, we need only know three things.
1. Does the match catch move freely in the receiver (with only spring tension pulling it back down). If so, then with a good working mag (read still having a strong spring and a USGI one at that) shotgun the upper open, and insert a empty mag. Did the mag catch fully rise up from the tension of the mag follower. If no, then pull the catch and confirm that the bottom of the spring channel is debree free, and the spring is first install, the buffer after such, and that the catch will rotate on the roll pin before installing the catch back in the rifle. If the new USGI mag will still not raise the catch, then suspect that either the spring channel was drill too shallow, or the catch spring a coil of two to long. 2. When you pull back on the charging handle all the way, is the last inch of two of pull constent with the same amount of tension as from the middle of the pull back. If the tension gets stronger the last inch or so, then either the wrong buffer spring is in play (full length in a carbine tube) or the hammer is wedging between the bottom of the carrier and the top of the trigger (at the rear tail of the hammer. Also, when the charging handle is all the way back, does the face of the bolt clear the bolt catch, yet stops short of the back of the ejection port around 1/4" to 3/8". 3. With only a single loaded round in a mag, when such is inserted into the rifle, the round chamber loaded and fired, will be the bolt lock back on the catch. If the rifle is short stroking (did not lock back on the catch), and all the above correct, the bolt is not be stroked back far enough for the catch to even have a chance of retaining the bolt via the bolt face. In cause such as these, suspect either ammo, or the B/C binding in the upper receiver (key too wide for the upper slot), or a leak or misalingment in the gas sytem the problem at hand (gas tube not aligned with the key falls into this as well) |
WOW!! didnt know that! I guess I was just freaking out. my bolt and barrel will be here this week. I'm a total tard with ar's(this will be my first ever) I'm actualy releived I was being a tard I hope that fact that it catched on the bolt carrier when cycled slower wont effect performance once built.
