| I have a Colt 6920 with less than 800 rounds through it. Bought new. The last time cleaning it, I noticed the cotter pin was slightly bent. It was still able to back into the bolt carrier and still held the firing pin in place fine. I'm just wondering what causes this and should I be looking for anything specific within my rifle? |
| I'm positive it wasn't bent before. I know I would have noticed. I only fired the rifle a bunch of times and cleaned it properly after each range visit. Used winchester Q3131 each time as I do with my other two ARs. But if a bent pin is not a problem then that's a load off on me. What can cause this though? |

Could be a couple of things.
If it is an sp1 style carrier the hammer could be catching the firing pin collar and bending the pin. If it is a shrouded type carrier maybe the carrier is pushing the hammer off the firing pin while gas are still blowing out around the bolt tail and against the firing pin collar forcing it back into the retaining pin? Always lots of carbon on that area of the firing pin. |

As J3 pointed out, these could the problems, but since the item is a serviceable unit with a limited life span, having a few spars for replacements when needed is not a bad thing.
Also, to get the most out of the pins, if you install the pin so the middle slot is in line with the B/C, the metal is will be more resilient to bending. |
