For the first time, I just cleaned the barrel of a new, unfired AR15 that I build from a kit. (my first AR15) I seperated the upper and lower, removed the bolt group and charging handle inserted a cleaning rod guide and ran a few patched through the barrel. After putting the rifile back together, I noticed a small D-shaped keeper on the floor where I was working.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7475/keeperq.jpg The rifle still passes function checks. So, I'm thinking this part has nothing to do with my rifle. Does any one in the forum recognize the part? If not, I'll feel much more comfortable shooting the rifle for the first time. Thanks for your help! |
| It look very similar to the spring that comes with a JP speed hammer. JP hammers do not use a J spring to retain the hammer. The spring pictured attaches to one side of the hammer at the pin boss and indexes into the outer groove on the hammer pin to retain the hammer. Clear as mud? |
| CAC01, I googled some photos of the JP hammers you referenced. At least one of them looks similar to the DSC trigger and includes a keeper that looks exactly like the one I have. I've sent my query to the DSC service department with a copy of the photo. Thanks for your help. |

Mystery solved. I couldn't wait for the manufacturer to get back to me, so I took the hammer out and inspected both sides where the hammer pin slides through. The pin slid out very easily, without the resistance I expected. Sure enough, one side had a cutout in which the d-shaped keeper fits perfectly and lines up with a groove in one side of the pin. The keeper, which had to have come installed on the hammer already, must have slipped off yesterday when I was positioning the hammer, under spring tension, in the lower.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to help and, ultimately, for pointing me in the right direction. Life is good! |
