I think I may have dimpled the inside of my barrel trying to attach a muzzle brake.  Am I F'ed or can this be fixed, or will it shoot ok, it looks like a very superficial bump 3/16" inside the threaded part of the barrel.  I drilled a hole through the brake, and part way into the barrel.  Then I tapped the brake, and put a set screw in.  I guess screwing the set screw down to hard must of did it.

You may be F'ed.  Or not.  See this thread http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=66&t=439345

Sounds like a SBR in the making. If NJ allows them.

It was probably a SBR to begin with, I would guess.

If not, why would anyone bother pinning on the muzzle attachment... If it is screwed on right, it isn't going anywhere.

I called the ATF about this, SBRs are definetly illegal or unrecognized in NJ. They didn't even know anything about the $200 tax stamp. I would assume to be able to get a SBR, it is the same as the ownership of a machine gun in NJ. The only way to legally own a machine gun in NJ is to first get your permit to carry, which is next to impossible. You would have to be like a diamond trasporter and the state would much rather you hire an armed guard. After you get the permit to carry, you would then need to get verification from the cheif of the state police. I heard even a retired cheif of police was denied for a machine gun.

Anyway, if your certain its dimpled, you could have it cut and recrowned by a gunsmith.
The reason for pinning in NJ is to comply with the gay assualt weapons ban of evil combinations of parts/features. People need to do a little more investigating and either take their gun to a gunsmith for pinning or use silver solder instead. That or buy guns/uppers/barrels that have target crowns.

This is the moral of the story... this is the 2nd barrel screwed up in about a month, because someone tried to pin on an attachment.

Exactly. I would say if your fairly experienced and mechanically inclined with a proper TIG setup, go ahead and do it. A hex screw is not a pin. Its still a screw and still not proper.

Ah hell, slap it on a full-auto lower and run a few magazine dumps though it.  The pressure of the bullets will smooth that "dimple" out no problem.

Caveat: This is the worst advice you will read all week.

Welcome to the club you may want to check this topic. Grab a cold one there are a few side issues attached.

Edit: I see someone already steered you to that link any questions IM me.  Best idea yet?  Take it to a gunsmith cut it down an attach a longer flash suppressor or whatever it takes but don't pin instead have the gunsmith silver solder with 1100 degre F silver solder.  I like challenges and learning stuff so I'm DIY'ing and if that ain't a straight line you boys are asleep at the wheel.
