I had a major malfunction today.  After firing through one magazine, I inserted another & pressed the bolt catch release as normal.  However, when looking to see why it would not fire, I saw that the bolt was only halfway closed.  Hitting the forward assist did nothing.  I tried to pivot the receivers, but it would not allow me to.  When I got home, I spent more time and by turning upside down & shaking while holding back on the charging handle I finally heard something clattering around in there.  After more shaking I was able to clear the debris and then pivot the receiver.  Lying inside was the Buffer Retainer pin and spring.  The pin has gouges in it from the bolt, and the spring is flattened.    This would have been a major no-good in a battle situation.  Can anyone tell me why this happened?  All help appreciated.

Buffer tube not threaded in far enough to hold the retainer or the tube came loose?

Full stock or collapsible stock?  What brand stock?  If a collapsible, was a wrench used to tighten castle nut?  Recently had a friend that installed a CAA collapsible stock.  The buffer tube treads were not clocked/indexed properly to tube.  Not enough tube was over buffer retainer to hold it down.  Retainer entered path of BCG and destroyed buffer tube while cycling.

This has a full stock.  Buffer tube is as tight up to the lower receiver as it can go, and stops right at the buffer pin nipple. Some have stated that it should thread in past the retainer pin, but this does not.  I should mention also that this is not a new gun.  I've had it for years, and with many rounds sent down range.

Same as CATTECH.  If you have been using this rifle with no problems and this just happened, the buffer tube must have come loose.
