I have a .450 Bushmaster 16" upper and a .450 Bushmaster marked lower. The lower was purchased separate from the upper, but is a factory completed lower with full stock. I purchased several Fulton-Amory single-shot followers...the same that came in the .450 Bushmaster mag...and put them into several 30-round mags. They all seem to hold 10 rounds of the .450 with no problem, and function great with the exception of one problem. The bolt and bolt carrier will not completely close when striping the top round off when the mag is loaded with 10 rounds. If its loaded with 9 rounds...no problem...10 rounds it will strip but not completely close the bolt.

Question is this, would a XP action spring from Wolff and a slightly heavier buffer solve this problem? I'm not sure of the buffer weight in the rifle now, but would assume it's just a standard rifle weight. If I were to replace the buffer, what weight should I go with? Should I just replace the action spring and leave the buffer alone? Or, should I just load 9 rounds and forget it?

I really would like some input before wasting money on springs and buffers only to find that the problem won't go away.

Thanks.

The problem is with the mag, and not the buffer or recoil spring.

Simply, when the mag is forced loaded with ten rounds, it's packed tightly, and not left with room for at least 1/2 more rounds of space for the top round to be pushed downward (read chances are that you can't lock the mag home with the bolt closed as it without a lot of mag pounding to seat it).

Granted that you could play with the buffer and spring to try to get the rig to strip the extra round feed into the mag, you may run into cycle problems as well.

Yeah, that is what I originally thought too, but I checked them and the top round will go down enough...I could probably load an eleventh round really. The mags seat find with 10 rounds...don't have to slam or force them. I'm thinking that the spring/buffer combo needs to have a tad more mass and tension.

Guess I'll suck out $15 on the Wolff spring and try it first...if that doesn't work may try to increase the weight on the buffer...those look to be substantially higher in cost though!

Thanks.

Just in case anyone else has this problem with a .450 Bushmaster....the Wolff XP action spring arrived today, and after installing everything works like a champ. In all of the 30 round mags that I turn into .450 ten-shots, the XP spring easily strips the top round and loads/functions great. Too bad Bushmaster doesn't include this as original equipment.

I have talked to a lot of people that are using the Sig 556 mags with no blue follower and no problems with 10 rounds.
I have not tried myself because of funds, but 2 sig 556 mags are about $60.
I have used my P mag on some hollow point reloads I have not tried more than 8 but functions fine.
The factory rounds are too long for the P mags.

If you do any reloading there is a good thread on calguns.net
I have a thread on ar15.com but not as much traffic as the calguns thread

Thanks for the info Jager. I do plan on reloading once I get a collection of brass going. The mags I put the followers in are working great, although I found that some mags work better than others. Brownell 30rd mags seem to be too tight, and follower gets stuck - could be corrected by taking a little off the front of the follower. C-Products seem to do ok. The Bushmaster 30rd mags work great and that is what I'm using now. Haven't tried the followers in my other brands yet.
