| I've just finished building a rifle dedicated to target/varmint shooting. It has a Sun Devil upper and lower, JP trigger, 20" Lothar Walther SS barrel with a Hogue Overmolded free float fore end. and an A2 stock. It has a rifle length gas system. I have only shot it a few times to test function as I don't have the scope mounted yet. I have only used PMC ammo. The rifle is short stroking resulting in a falure to feed most of the time. The bolt carrier doesn't lock back after the last round is fired. Sometimes the bolt will catch a cartridge midway and jam but most of the time the bolt simply closes on an empty chamber. I am using Pmags. Empties are ejected about 6 or 7 feet away at about the 3 o'clock position. The gas port is the proper size (.093). The gas block is positioned correctly And the gas tube enters the upper through the barrel nut with free space all around. When the bolt carrier is pushed forward to engage the gas tube the tube is moved very slightly. No resistance is felt but the key and tube is definatly rubbing. Is this a problem and how can it be corrected? Does anyone have any advice. I plan on reloading for accuracy which usually means reduced power loads so I am concidering a Wolff reduced power spring. Is this a good idea. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

Give the rifle a once over checking for any type of binding, such as bur on the recoil spring, hammer wedging, an so forth. Also align the gas tube correctly as well.
Furthermore, remember to break in the rifle (upper bearing area's) well lubed with CLP. This will allow the carrier key to mate (have it's way) to the upper track. As for the reduced spring, granted that it may be needed if the rig is going to be feed lower powdered ammo, but should not be needed to run factory ammo. |
