Yes, I'm a moron.

How do you get the YHM quad-rail handguard off the weapon?  It appears to require a special tool.  And then, to slide it off, it looks like I'd have to remove the front flip-up?

School this idiot, please, before I break something.

Remove the front flip-up sight.  I believe the gas block is just a standard FSB shaved down, so the tube should clear it.  You have to loosen the locking ring at the rear of the FF tube.  If you don't have the YH tool, you can use a flat head screw driver (with the tip wrapped in electrical tape so as not to mar the locking ring) and a hammer to tap the ring loose.  Having the upper in a vice helps.  After the locking ring is loose the FF tube should unscrew.  Hopefully Bushy didn't use any thread locker.

They couldn't make it easy, could they?  I remember all you needed to do with the A2 was push down in that same area, and peel off the handguard.  Now I need tools and a vise.

So much for easy field-stripping, eh?

Thanks, USM.

Actually, the nut wasn't on all that tight––I can turn it my hand.

Only problem is that I can only back it off so far before it meets the receiver and stops.  What now?  Should I also be turning the barrel nut (the thing with the holes) or, at this point, should I be tugging forward on the handguard to pull it loose?

You can leave the barrel nut alone; just unscrew the handguard.  I just took mine apart.

I couldn't get the lockring (aka jamnut) ring loose, so with the upper clamped into a vice (using a receiver block) I grabbed the tube and turned and unscrewed it from the barrel nut.

You can check out the official YHM instructions:

Never even noticed the anti-rotation screws (they were hidden beneath the rail covers).

Now that I finally got my head out of my arse, it's a simple unscrew of the forearm.

Anyway, thanks again, USM.
