Hello, I have been reading these boards and really enjoying it. I am new to these boards and to these black rifles so bear with me. Ak's are ok but this rifle is what I have wanted for a long time and I finally took the plunge. My first outing was a little dissapointing though

I Just went out today with my new Colt Match Competition H Bar. I used about 40 rounds of brass cased ammo sighting in and getting the feel of it with no problem. Then I loaded up some full mags with WolfF FMJ to blast away. The first problem happened on the first mag about halfway through Boom.. Click. I ejected the round and looked for a firing pin mark and suprise No primer. I seperated the upper and lower and made sure it was not still in there somewhere. Then about every other mag I would get the boom-click but there was no round chambered. Then finally after about 300 rounds boom and no click the round fired but the case was stuck in the chamber and no amount of pulling on the charge handle would move it. I finally took it home and a brass rod and a hammer tap removed the case. I looked it over carefully and made sure it was the right thing since I was also shooting  some 7.62x39 in a AK . I cleaned it good and went out and squeezed of 30 rounds with no problem.
I was using Brownells™ TAC (Tactical and Competition) Magazines.  WOLF 223 REM 55 GR FMJ
This gun was new and had never been fired so it was not cleaned before firing  but I did spray a little Rem oil on the bolt before firing.
I have shot thousands of wolf rounds in my AK's with very few missfires or jams. Do these AR's Not like Wolf?
This was a "new" shipment of ammo from Cabelas .Maybe Wolf is having more quality problems than usual due to high demand?
Are these Mags any good?
maybe the rifle needs a "break in"
Do I need to take ny rod and hammer with me everytime I shoot?
I read somewhere about the coating on the wolf melting in a hot barrell and mine was about hot enough to light a cigarette on but the jam happened in the middle of a rapid fire and the round did not sit in the chamber and cook.
Any help appreciated.

At least 2 manufacturers (that I know of) say not to use Wolf or any other steel cased ammo (Bushmaster and Olympic Arms).  The lacquer coating is one good reason.

But as to your comparison with the same style of ammo in an AK, there is an important difference:  The 7.62x39 cartridge has much more body taper than the 5.56 NATO.  (This is why AK magazines are so curved).  More body taper means more reliability of extraction under dirty chamber conditions.  A 5.56 chambered AK is not as reliable as a 7.62 AK for this reason.

Use high quality (not wolf) ammo, clean and lube your AR regularly, and you will have no troubles!

Oh, and welcome to AR15.com!

Just making sure, this first round you mentioned that was without a primer, did it fire or not?

My guess is that the gun just wasn't properly cleaned and lubed to start out with.

Strip it, give a good cleaning (but no need for scrubbing), and lube the hell out of it.  Put a couple drops of oil into the gas key and into the gas vents on the side of the BCG.

AR's run best when wet.

The round without a primer did not fire. I ejected it and saw it had not fired I retrieved it and saw no primer.
I did give the weapon a good cleaning after the stuck case and it cycled a 30 rd mag with no problem.

It boggles my mind as to why someone would run cheap unreliable undependable Wolf ammo through their brand new expensive AR. You just spent over $1500 on a nice new AR and to save a couple of dollars per box of ammo you went with the cheapest dirtiest ammo with the worst quality. It's like buying a new vette and putting in regular gasoline to save $5 a tank on filling up.

Another analogy - you finally scored a date with the prettiest and sexiest most sought after girl on the whole campus - you dress in old jeans and take her out to a cheap fast food place.

Another analogy - you buy the most expensive nicest prime rib steak on the menu and order boonesfarm wine.

That's what I thought you were saying. This is not the first time Wolf has been reported to be missing a primer here and there. That is no fault of the rifle. However, I would ditch the Wolf and get some sort of good factory ammo. Shoot that and then reload the empties.

Hmmm..

1k of Wolf (camo) box...$250
1k of lake city (cheaper than dirt) $1100

not really the same as saving $5 of a corvette fill-up.

And wolf is awesome. Anyone who says otherwise is a snob or gets his ammo for free from the government.

Also I had to go with what I could get. I did get some Remington brass case when I bought my rifle but paid a premium price .I ordered 1k of Wolf from Cabelas for less than I paid for 500 at the gun shop.  I have shot probably 15k rounds of Wolf in my AK's over the years and had very few mis-fires. I know its a little dirty but I clean my weapons as soon as I get home from shooting no matter how tired I am or what else needs to be done.
Any problems with these  Brownells™ TAC  Magazines ? For some reason it seemed like some of the problems I had were the bolt cycling but nothing feeding from the magazine.

And hey I have put regular in a Corvette before...after Katrina I was just glad to get it Just like I was glad to get some ammo regardless of the brand.
And I Had some Boonsfarm  on a first date with the prettiest girl on campus ,and we are still happy together after 31 years.....until she finds out what I paid for this rifle
