I was shooting my colt sporter Ar. pulled the charge handle back to load a shell, and it didnt go all the way forward so i hit the forward assist. must not of been paying attention cause the bolt didnt close all the way. pulled the trigger and it just went click as now would be expected. then i was not able to pull the charge bar back to eject the live shell. had to disassemble the weapon in order to get the shell out. put an empty mag in, then locked the bolt back. then i put that single shell in a mag put it in and hit the button that closes the bolt, it fired fine. can put a mag in and shoot through it fine with no problems. the problem is that if you put a mag in and close the bolt. i am not able to eject the live round that is in the chamber. i dont think it is supposed to be like that, and only noticed this after the issue noted  above. anybody have any ideas as to what happened or broke? planning on taking it to a gunsmith this weekend but this thing has just been bothering me. anything could help, thanks....

Easter Egg Hunt time!!!!!

Pull the B/C apart,  check inside the barrel extension lugs, the receiver cavities (pull the FCG if needed to search under the trigger), and even in the receiver extension assembly.

Where playing a twisted game of look for Waldo",
but instead of finding Waldo, it's pieces of a blown primer that is hiding in the rifle somewhere, causing the problems.

P.S. While you have everything apart, that would be a good time to do a detailed cleaning as well.

i dont think its a blown primer. i strip down and clean it after everytime i take it out, including after this happened i broke it down took the firing pin out and the bolt and cleaned them and everything. yall struck my curiousity so i broke it down and looked through it took the charge bar and bolt out looked everywhere i could in the upper, didnt see anything, broke the bolt down and didnt see anything. i also looked in the trigger assembly and didnt see anything. also i dont notice anything big broken on the bolt or ejector, not to say that something isnt broke and i just cant tell. my dad and I have been shooting this thing since the mid 90's this is the first thing to go wrong with it... (i looked up the serial number to find the year it was manufactured... its a 1978 pre-ban)

It is only locking up with a empty mag  in the rifle, and when you drop the mag, you can eject the live shell, or is the problem with a loaded mag as well?

Really, check two these areas.

The first is the alignment of the gas tube to the carrier key.  If you had a bad jam (tip up jam), you may have bent the gas tube out of index with the key.
With the bolt removed from the carrier, insert just the carrier in the upper and see if the tube is entering the carrier key cleanly.  If not, then tweak the tube so it does enter cleanly to the carrier key.

Next, take a good look at the bolt catch (ejection side/ highest side when it up).  Could be that the bolt catch is bitting into the carrier ramp track, and you may need to round that edge/side a bit to allow the catch to glide cleanly against the carrier bottom track.

The bolt will lock open when there is a empty mag in the gun. but i can't eject a live cartrigde whether i drop the mag or not it doesnt matter if there is a loaded mag with a live shell in the chamber and empty mag with a live shell in the chamber or a live shell in the chamber without a mag. either way i cant pull the bolt back open.

Clean the chamber with a chamber brush and solvent, and when you think that you have it as clean as you can get it, drill spin a clean CLP soaked 30 cal mop in the chamber to confirm that it's clean (mop not turning back from fouling still in the chamber).

Chances are you are not getting the end of chamber clean (last step cut before the throat), and this build up is causing the  problem.

Does the B/C move freely without a cartridge?  If so, have you carefully inspected the chamber to ensure you don't have a separated cartridge case?

Inspect the B/C and make sure the bolt is able to properly rotate and the came pin isn't binding.

hey guys so ill checked out all of your suggestions to see if any of them were the problem with my gun. so finally i took some of the reloads i had, and some factory rounds out to the range. i loaded the reloads, chambered one of them and had the same problem, couldnt eject a live round. so then i shot them up no problems, and then loaded some factory rounds. chambered one of the factory rounds, and ejected the live round fine no problem. im glad that its just a resizing issue of my reloads and not a problem with the gun itself. just wanted to let ya guys know i figured it out and thanks for all the input that yall gave.
