I just bought a New Smith and Wesson 5.45 x 39 upper. I just finished putting together a lower, and when I tried to put the upper on, the carrier was sticking out of the end of the upper preventing the upper/lower from locking up.
Removing the upper it looks like the carrier is sticking out of the receiver about 1/8 of an inch. I tried tapping the carrier with the palm of my hand to seat it but to no avail it wouldn't go any farther forward. I removed the bolt and firing pin assembly as I thought for some reason this could be preventing the closing of the Bolt/carrier group. The carrier will not Seat all the way into the receiver. Looking in it looks like there is about a 1/8 gap in front also between the carrier and chamber, so I am pretty sure the gas tube was installed to far back. Is there a remedy for this??? The Upper is FREAKIN BRAND NEW, and was set up wrong. Do you think I should call smith and send it back to them??? Or are there other options?? Thanks FIXED THE PROBLEM! Thanks to all those who helped. |

I figured it out. I pulled my other Ar-15 apart. A standard gas tube protrudes about 7/8 of an inch down into the receiver. In the Smith and Wesson Upper that I bought, the Gas tube protrudes about 1 1/8 inches into the receiver accounting for the bolt not closing. Guess I am shipping my BRAND Fing NEW upper back to Smith, as I guess they don't know how to build an Upper.
What do you think I should ask for, besides shipping both ways???? |

87GN, THANK YOU!!!!!!!! They missed the Gas Tube hole with the Roll Pin!!!!! IDIOTS!!!!!!! I will pop the roll pin out and remount it. Now I just have to find a Punch small enough. Glad to hear that you won't have to deal with sending it back and forth. Let us know how it shoots. |
