A buddy and I were finishing up at the range the other evening when a guy rolls up with his fancy new gas piston AR (I'm not sure what it was but the lower looked really nice.) He said he paid $1500 for it. This was his first time shooting it.
I'm just watching my buddy shoot his last mag and the new arrival shoot his. This guy is shooting Black Box American Eagle XM193. He fires four rounds and as I'm watching his brass, I notice that the primer is missing out of one of the casings. He then notices the malfunction and tries to pull the charging handle back and of course it won't budge. I show him the AE case sans primer and tell him there's probably a primer stuck in there somewhere. He tells me it's his first AR and doesn't really know how to clear it. I offer what little knowledge I have and suggest that he hold on to the CH and hit the buttstock against a railroad tie that was in a safe location. He was really banging on it for a minute or two when I told him that if it hasn't budged yet, it probably wasn't going to. He also tried to remove the upper from the lower. No go as well. I was all out of suggestions after that. I said "good luck" and we left. It just got me thinking though... How do you fix this malfunction? ETA-the bolt wasn't fully seated in the chamber. It had maybe 1/4"-1/2" to go. I'm guessing there was a live round in/near the chamber but I'm not sure. |

The loose Primer is probably wedged in the barrel extension.
Since the bolt is not locked home, and the butt stoke blow while pulling the CH didn't work, use the gap between the barrel extension and carrier to his advantage. Mag removed, and the muzzle in a safe direction, use a large flat head screw driver to open the action (again, go in from the mag well, and just twist the screw driver to get the carrier moving backwards off the barrel extension). Once the bolt lugs are in line with the openings of the barrel extension lugs, the CH pull and butt stock method again should do the trick. Note: if he does not find the primer, he need to search for it. Chances are after the action has been cleared, it will seek refuge under the trigger (have to pull the FCG to dig it out most of time when it hides here). |
