Is it normal to have play (side to side) between the upper and the lower? My push pins come out very easy

Some play is normal, and a accuwedge may help is it just bothers you to much.
If you just have to have rock solid, then tension take down pins are the answer.

If you want, throw in an accuwedge or o-ring. It's not totally necessary but it will tighten it up

I ordered an Accu-wedge, we'll see if that works.

Keep in mind that the Accuwedges are made for low shelf receivers.
On high shelf receivers, having to razor trim the bottom of the wedge to fit correctly (allow you to get the upper locked home on the lower) is normal.
