i am the curious sort-a-feller, just how does the headspace in the AR get adjusted? would the bolt face get turned? or perhaps shim the bbl ext.? |
| When a barrel is mated to an extension the headspace is set by the manufacturer (or the people assembling a barrel blank and extension) with an in-spec bolt. If your headspace is off, all you can do is swap bolts until in spec. If unable to get within spec then it is recommended that the barrel be replaced. |
Still the question remains can he reassemble the barrel to the barrel extension with a shim to gain greater headspace or ream the chamber? Not sure how you might shorter headspace maybe face turn the barrel extension. |

As stated, head space is created when the barrel is produced (barrel extension installation). If found later that the barrel/chamber is head spaced too tight, then there are a few options. If not chrome lined, then the chamber is just re-reamed to correct. If chrome lined, then a bolt could be mod'd to achieve such, since this would not remove the lining from the chamber (read last ditch effert if the barrel is not under warrenty) What is not ideal is removing the barrel extension since these are torque to 175 ft lbs, and the FSB and gas port indexed off from it. As for the head space being too long, it can be attacked by the barrel extension (setting it forward a complete/true wind) but it does open up the hole can of worms as stated above. Bottom line is depending on the barrel, most of the time it's cheaper to just replace it with a correct head spaced unit, then to spend the money on smithing charges to correct such (read will cost more than the barrel itself most of the time, plus a barrel produced bad is a factory defect, no mater the age). |
