Got an issue and I realize it's a maintenance issue but I've never seen this before. I pulled out my Bushmaster AR today and went to pull the charging handle to be certain the rifle was clear. I pull the charging handle and everything is stuck! I sprak some Rem oil into the bolt area and it frees up. I locate a green funk at the end of the gas tube taht is also located in the gas tube portion of the bolt. I'm one of those guys who cleans weapons to the point where they look like factory new so this suprised me. It seems as if the green funk appeared or "grew" for lack of a better term. I know it wasn't there three weeks ago, because I removed the rifle and cleared it with no issues. Now suddenly it's there. Anyone else experience this? Thanks |

I’ve found this before, and it’s nothing to be alarmed about. It’s simply firing residue that reacted with solvent left over in your rifle from cleaning. Try spraying out your gas tube with Break-Free Powder Blast, or the cheaper alternative, Automotive Carb or Brake Cleaner. Then, disassemble your bolt/carrier assy, and do the same to your carrier key gas port. Follow up with a pipe cleaner and CLP or which ever lube you prefer. Make carrier key cleaning a part of your cleaning routine and you shouldn’t have anymore problems. Also, check the Maintenance and Cleaning Forum. I post there a lot with tips on cleaning methods and techniques. |

The ammo was Winchester white box "Q" loads (that sadly had a sticker of $9.99 for a box of 50 rounds on it! Man...ammo has gotten pricey but thats another issue) I shot the rifle last november and cleaned it but may have not sprayed anything into the gas tube as the previous post suggest. It just suprised me since I know for a fact three weeks ago there were no issues and then suddenly the whole action is frozen up. None of my other ar's or rfiles have done this, so obviously it was a maintenance issue. Thanks for the replies. |
