First issue: I've had an issue with a receiver swap (unknown A1 clone to RRA Flattop). I've narrowed part of the problem down to the charging handle. When I compare the two charging handles I have, the hole in the center is offset. The one that works is offset to the left, the one that doesn't is offset to the right (when looking at the hole in the handle--narrow end toward you). The difference between the left and right side offsets is about .15". Are either of the conditions normal? I've never realized there might be an offset (never had to look that closely). The owner of the rifle with the problems said that he had difficulty getting rounds to chamber, and I wonder if this thing rubbing the gas tube wrong may have been the contributing factor. Anyone run into this before? I'm debating whether to either buy a new charging handle or dremel out the one I have. Anyone have experience on grinding out a charging handle? The other problem is that when I drop the bolt carrier into the receiver, it doesn't go all the way home. There's about 1/16" of the carrier sticking up at the back side. When I put in a good charging handle, attach a lower, and rack the action, it locks up just fine (I haven't fired it yet). When I look at the gas tube from the back of the receiver, it appears that the tube is butted up against the right side of the hole for the tube in the receiver. Is this normal? |

The hole is the center is just so the handle clears the gas tube and key nose. You can oversized the hole a bit ( next size up drill bit should take care of this), but not to the point that you weaken the front end much, since the real function of the CH is to have it's front/bottom edge grab the front of the carrier to pull it back. Is the problem hole it's self, or the front bottom tab a bit too long and binding the CH between the upper track and top of the carrier when the bolt goes to enter the barrel extension? |
CH's are cheap, just chuck the shit unit and buy another (or have it defective replaced if you know where it can from). |
