I just bought a new Rock River Arms A4 AR-15.  My forward assist is practically inoperable.  I just noticed it today.  My bolt carrier hadn't gone all the way forward so I hit the forward assist and nothing happened.  So I took it apart and noticed that when I pressed the forward assist it wasn't springing out properly.  It springs back just fine, but if you've ever looked at how a forward assist operates it presses into the upper and then out sorta out and a way (hard to explain).  I'm guessing this happens by a spring.  I looked at the parts on the Rock River Arms website and it appears it has what they call a Pawl spring.
Has anyone else had something like this occur?  I'm guessing they either forgot to put the Pawl Spring in when they built the upper, or they assembled it wrong, or something its broken.  If any of you were to guess, what would you guess.  I'm probably going to call Rock River Arms on Monday and ask them what they think.

Better chances are they did not install the retainer pin correctly, and it is binding the FA.

If you pulled it apart, then check to make sure it has all the parts, and when you reinstall, make sure that the cross pin is driven through on the FA flat.

Also, with the FA out of the rifle, the pawn should be springing over.  If the pawn stays straight (in line with the assembly) out side of the rifle, then pull the pawn and check the spring and detent to make that something is not binding up there.

Thanks.  I'll probably tear into it and see what I can see.  Hopefully the problem is as you've described and I don't have to order the parts.
