Okay, had a 16" A3 upper, traded it to a buddy of mine for a 16" Dissy. He took it out twice and fired it, had no problems with it. He then tries to swap from an A2 stock to a CAR stock, and can't get it right. Puts the rifle back together and now the bolt and CH won't come all the way to the rear, acts like it's stuck on a case that won't eject, but the rifle is empty. I took it apart, swapped the A2 for the CAR stock that he wanted on it and the bolt and CH still wouldn't come to the rear. Inspected the tube, tried a different bolt and bolt carrier group, still getting the same problems. Finally inspected his CH and saw that the round hole in the end was no longer round, it was more oval in shape. I had an extra CH laying around, swapped it into the rifle with all his original parts again and VOILA... it worked like a charm. I've been trying to figure out WHY the enlarged hole would keep the rifle from working though and I can't come up with a reaon... can anyone enlighten me? And is it worth getting the oval CH back from him or is it basically trash now? Thanks |

nothing wrong with the buttstock replacement. The parts switched out no problem, he's not having a problem with it since I switched them for him. I'm just trying to figure out why an offset hole in the CH would cause the gun to lock up. I've looked at the parts and the only thing I can see it that the hole would be larger than the gas key and that shouldn't prevent it from cocking everything back. Still no ideas about why the larger hole would cause things to lock up? |

Thank you Dano 523, that would explain it, the CH is grabbing the front of the key instead of slipping over it, which would account for the CH not being able to fully retract to the rear. I'm getting the bum CH back from him tomorrow night, so I'll be able to check it in other guns and look for that with a dental mirror and see what happens. |
| Sounds like the charging handle is slipping up and over the small flat on the bolt carrier and wedging up against the inside of the upper. The hole should fit the gas key fairly close to prevent this. That little flat on the carrier is not very large. Fit the two together outside the rifle and you will see the relation of the parts. Bad charging handle should be trashed. |
