Shortstrokes. Basically I know it's not the barrel, been replaced twice by the OEM. Not carrier key either, did it with two seperate carriers. Might be gas rings or extra powered action spring/buffer. Now if a weapon runs fine on Radway but shortstrokes on Wolf then very small window for error exists. Both rounds being underpowered with one slightly more so than the other. Will an extra powered action spring slow action enough to increase Shortstrokes? Will a standard CAR spring with H-Buffer be a better fit? C77 |

You’re missing the information on the rifle/brand its self. There are a few rifles that will not run on the coated case ammo until well broken in, and another lot that will not run with RG ammo due to barrel gas port size. If the rifle will run on RG, and not Wolf, then rough/tight chamber condition is the problem. Going with a stronger than standard strength recoils spring, much less a heaver buffer are both items in the wrong direction. |
Rifle is all LMT, upper replaced, sent back to factory twice for related issues. Basically run with standard CAR spring and CAR buffer, perhaps polish chamber? C77 |
Would you still suggest just running with a standard spring? The reason I opted for an extra powered spring is because the stock spring lacked the balls to push the round into the chamber. However now it malfs the other way with the new spring. It shortstrokes about 50% of the rounds it eats. C77 |
Come on guys! I've had my own issues with a quality homebuilt M4 and as I linger about theses forums and read I keep getting "Oh let it break in! about a thuosand rounds should do it!" or "Polish it with 1000 or 2000 grit crokus cloth!" or "Mabey it's not getting anough gas or perhaps it's getting too much gas!!!" "Change out the gas key and don't forget to stake it properly as most manufactureres don't do it right!" or "Replace the gas tube...after all there might be a burr in it" and god whatver you do, be sure to hose it down with plenty of break-free!!! Does anyone besides me see a pattern here? and this is what we issue our boys to fight with in the biggest fucking sandbox in the world! No I'm no kid! I'm 48 and have been around weapons all of my life. This is turning into a very, very bad joke and I'm not laughing!
|
That's a prime example!. Now we're quotoing SAMMI specs over issue 5.56 chamber dimensions...please, I'm still not laughing either. Any other lame reasons out there? how about copper-washer steel casings or underloaded Wolf M-193 or any other number of imported ammo that just doesn't quite seem up to par to function in either a mil-spec or civi model AR-15 rifle or carbine. We are all aware of fixes. something a easy as a adjustable gas tube would do the trick. It's just with all the years of developement of what is likely one of the best ergonomcally designed rifle/carbines out there, caliber not withstanding, We still get this....And I own one!

If you are trying to help... great.... if you want to bitch about the AR15 design... head on over to general discussion and start your own thread.

What is the barrel length? What stock (carbine or rifle?) A newer weapon not running on radway or Wolf is no cause for alarm.... use spec ammo. Ditch the action spring and heavy buffer... the heavy buffer isnt necessary and the action spring is likely the source of the problem... have seen that many times when people think they need to redesign the weapon and add a 10% Wolff spring. If you are having trouble stripping rounds from the mags - you need to break the mags in.... D&H mags when new had sharp feedlips. If you are using known good quality USGI mags with no feedlip anomolies and still cant strip a round, then replace your spring with a factory spec one. If that doesnt fix it - it is your mags. Using the LMT "enhanced" carrier or a spec one? Standard gas rings, or the "upgraded" 1 piece rings? |
To add to this, there have been a few lots of barrel extensions with the feed ramps milled well beyond the rough side, and polishing was required to solve the problem. If needed, post a photo of the feed ramps if you suspect them to be in question. |
In the name of all things Holy, please never compare a civilian rifle to that of which FN or Colt produces for the troops. If you have spent time searching through the post, you have seen time and time again my tangents on the differences between tighter civilian chambered barrels that are produced for greater accuracy, over correct chambers (true Nato sidewall and head space dimensions) that produce greater reliability. Furthermore, some of the barrels being released to the civilian public are borderline-chambered rough (conditions or plating), while others are just so reamer grooved flawed that they stand no chance in hell of ever performing. Without having the barrels in hand, we suggest ways to performance check the rifle as a whole via correct cleaning/lubing/ammo, and even going as far as check the assembly of the sub systems. If after all of this, the rifle is still a no-go, then it is better to have the person send the unit back to the manufacture for corrections than to chance someone voiding their warranty (again, a bad barrel/chamber being the root of the problem). Simply, if you seek help in trouble shooting your rifle, please post as much information you can on the rifle, and we can take it from there. |
Imagine my embarassmant. I always have to remind my wife" men don't bitch", they gripe, yeah I step in it evert time! Hill |
