Well, I went to the range today to sight in my brand new Bushmaster carbine.  Fired the first shot off, then pull the trigger for the 2nd shot.....nothing.  I looked in the chamber and the second round was jammed  in the feed ramp underneat the first round which failed to extract.

It took me awhile to get the magazine out because the round was stuck in the feed ramp and stuck under the magazine lip.  So I finally get the magazine out, and I'm wondering why the hell things like this seem to plague me all the time.  I didn't have a cleaning rod so I was wondering if I just wasted my money to shoot on the range. So I pull back the bolt and let it go to see if it gets a better grip on the round to extract it, but no dice.

Then I remembered that, I had ordered some Wolff extra power extractor springs when I ordered my sling, so I broke the rifle down, put in the new spring and put it back together.  I pull back the charging handle and let it go then pull it back again and out comes the stuck casing.  No problems shooting after that.

So I guess the moral of the story is......Wolff extractor springs kick ass.  I know, I know, y'all already knew that.....right?  I'm just glad that I had one, because I had read that Bushmasters came with a stiffer spring already and almost didn't order any.

Some ARs have tighter than spec chambers, or a rough chamber, and need additional help in extracting cases. My DPMS A2 was giving me periodic extraction issues when it was new; when I read here that DPMS chambers have a rep for being tight, I ordered a D-Fender extractor insert from Fulton, and no issues since. I have also seen posts here about using an industry standard O ring to give the extractor the same kind of boost.

I guess there are many ways to skin a cat, and Wolff springs have certainly gained their reputation for good reason. Your solution is another option.

Good luck with your new AR!

I had the same thing happen today with my brand new Bushmaster. Bang, failure to extract, big mess, disasemble, examine, reassemble. Second round (Winchester 55gr FMJ), bang, and another failure to extract. I'm going to clean the chamber thorougly and try again but I've never experienced this with my Colt HBAR. Is this common?

Are you guys cleaning these new rifles thoroughly before range time? Just a friendly reminder!

Make sure the ammunition you are using doesn't have badly seated primers. I had a few bad ones from Federal which prevented the case from being flush with the face of the bolt, and not allowing the extractor to grip it fully unless the bolt was rammed into it.
