Quick question, I never had a problem with the bolt not locking back using the bolt catch, but ever since I installed a 9mm RRA buffer into my 16" carbine the bolt is either hard to lock back or if the buttstock is jarred the bolt goes forward. The catch shows alittle bit of wear, but nothing to worry about I thought. Has anyone ever had this problem? Possible cures? Would I be better off just going back to the light .223 buffer? Thanks, any info appreciated. ARJAKE |

If it only fails to lock back after firing the last round from an empty magazine, then I'd say that the buffer is too heavy for your application, causing a slight shortstroke. If it fails to lock back reliably even after manually doing so, then you have a problem with your bolt catch that is being exposed by the heavier buffer. |

Also, check the buffer total length of the B/C-buffer by pulling the charging handle all the way back, and then check the relationship of the bolt face to the face of the bolt catch. The bolt face should have a good 1/4" to 3/8" gap between the two (bolt face rearward of the catch). And, since you will be playing with the buffer, check the bumper roll pin and the end of buffer spring coils. High spots on these three areas can cause scrapping binding, and hinder the action stroke. If you find high areas, just take a file to them (flushing out the roll pin against the sides of the buffer, and taking off the tips of the spring coils so they don't scrap down the inside receiver extension). Now the big question, since it sounds like the rifle ran fine with the standard carbine buffer, why in the hell did you drop a SMG buffer in the rig anyway??? |
