Today i was stripping down my rifles and apon cleaning my upper on my colt 20in HBAR i noticed that the barrel had some slight play in it, I can twist it slightly from side to side and up and down.   Im taking a stab in the dark here in guess that this is not good.  Am i correct here?

Ok.  so how do i go about fixing this?

your barrel nut cracked, and the pin broke.  I've had two bushies break this way.  Send it back to Colt.  They should fix it without charge.

One of my rifles had the side play , it was just a loose brl nut , removed gas tube and tightned brl .

takes a 1/16" pin punch, hammer, barrel nut wrench, receiver or barrel blocks, moly grease, and a vise.

Sorry to hear that. That means that in addition to pulling the barrel, you will also have to pull the front sight base as well to replace the barrel nut.

3 sgts looked at it.

the barrel nut is loose in there.  said that chances are its broken because how would that nut become that loose with out having the gas tube removed

there is play between the nut and the tube and in the tube itself. a crack should be obvious with the handguards off.

did not see one.  but there is something wrong since that nut is loose and nothing has ever been removed from the rifle
