I'm sure this has been covered before but I'm having problems with my Cav Arms build project. The roll pin seems to be excessively tight on the inside of the bolt stop and I'm thinking this is my problem as the stop isn't being allowed to pivot properly. Suggestions?

shotgun the rifle, insert an empty mag. does the bolt stop lift?

Nope, you can see where the bolt stop is pressing the follower down on the magazine, the follower is depressed. You can manualy push the bolt stop into position with your finger but it's tight and requires more effort to do so than my Bushmaster.

pull the bolt catch and make sure that there isn't a disconnector spring under it.

Did you remember to clip 1 to 2 rings off the bolt release spring?  I missed that part in the instructions and my mags wouldn't hold the bolt open untill I cut 1.5 rings off the spring.

I also spend 30 minutes infront of the television wiggling the bolt release back and forth with the upper receiver removed to loosen it up.

10 post recommending cutting springs, ya, you'll last long here.

my bad, wasn't aware that CavArms recommends clipping coils from the bolt catch spring on their lowers.

Earlan357,

You're not set up to receive IMs.

Problem solved. Trimmed 1.5 coils off the spring and polished the interior of the bolt catch with some JB paste. Works like a champ.  Thanks for the help.

Good to hear you got it working properly.

I sure do hear of alot of folks cutting springs to fix this. This can't be the end-all and proper solution all the time. Am I missing something?

The Cavalry Arms manual says to cut the spring but that is specific to the Cav 15 receivers only.  While it sounds contrary to inital logic, when you cut a spring you are actully making it stiffer.  Imagine if you straigtened a spring out into a straight wire.  The shorter the wire, the stiffer it gets.  However, since the spring is already compressed a little by the bolt catch, the initial amount of spring pressure required to lift it is reduced.  This makes it easier for the mag follower to lift the catch.   I agree with you though Subnet.  Some engineer (E. Stoner) chose that specific size/length/strength spring for a reason.  It may be a little too strong but in a combat situation, I would rather my bolt not lock back than to lock halfway through a mag while shooting full auto.  On my Stag lower, I polished everything up and the spring (RRA LPK) worked fine.  On my Cav lower (RRA LPK too) I had to cut it.
