I was shooting my AR at the range today. One problem I never encounter. The buffer spring jump out from the stopping pin. I try to give one more turn to the buffer spring tube, so the tube can hold the stopping pin in place. But came the other problem, the upper will not close to the receiver.

Can someone tell me what is the problem???

Thanks,
Luckylui

collapsible stock?

What is stopping the upper from closing? If it is hitting the buffer you should be able to push it in while closing the reciever.

Hi Tweak

it is collapsible stock.

Hi Shadowblade,

the buffer spring was was loose inside the lower receiver. even the stopping pin and the spring was inside the lower receiver

thanks both of you.

Any advise to fix this problem??

Just to make sure I understand the problem correctly...

The buffer tube was not screwed into the reciever far enough to catch the buffer detent pin, so the pin and spring came out - allowing the buffer to enter the reciever.

When you turned the buffer tube one turn in to catch the buffer detent pin, the upper reciever hit the buffer tube when trying to close it?  Or is it hitting the buffer?

If so, something is out of spec.  Is the hole for the buffer detent pin beaten out-of-round?  Do you have a good square clean end on the buffer tube?

Hi Shadowblade,

1) if I give one more turn to the buffer tube, so the tube can hold down the buffer ping, the buffer is sticking out a little too far. So the upper will not close down all the way.

2) I use a "H" buffer, the end is round, they do not have square corner.

I also notice the buffer pin is a little shorter than my freind AR. Is that normal???

Thanks for you help

I'm not familiar with the "H" buffer.  Haven't really had the need to experiment with different buffers yet.  But I was talking about the tube itself.

Try borrowing your friends detent pin - if you haven't already.  See if the hole the detent pin fits in is too big.

Worst case scenario - you could file the top of the buffer tube down to allow the upper reciever to close.

ETA - I just read again and if it is the buffer that it is hitting rather than the buffer tube, you should be able to push the buffer in with your finger while closing the reciever.

Spin/index the receiver exsention so that it rests on top of the outer edge, and just kisses the pin.

If the top of the tube is too long and exstends past the receiver threads, then you will need to mill the top of the tube to be flush with the end of threads. Also, you may need to mill the bottom of the tube to allow it to index correctly on the rifle, and just kiss the buffer retain pin.

Read: sounds like someone went low budget and bought the $29 carbine stock unit with the end of the tube not correctly indexed threaded, and the end of tube cut square.  Also check the front/top of the butt stock unit.  It should be cut/milled down to allow the charging handle to clear the butt stock when the stock is the closed position.

New RRA carbine receiver extensions are about $15 or so and have a little extra material at the bottom to help contain the pin better.
