My M4 build is functioning reliably, but the cases are ejecting forwards rather than to the side/back as my other ARs do. As a result, the front of the ejection port (i.e. the end nearest the muzzle) and the right side of the delta ring are getting a lot of brass marks and even getting a bit dinged up. I'd like to fix this.

This rifle has a carbine buffer tube and I am using an H-buffer with standard buffer spring; I tried a standard CAR buffer too, but this did not make a difference to the ejection. The bolt is already fitted with a Colt M4 extra power extractor spring. The ejector seems to work OK (not hangups, quite forceful), and cleaning/lubing it made no difference.

My next step is to switch the whole bolt/carrier group and/or lower with that from another rifle that ejects "correctly". Can anyone help me understand this phenomenon better and home in on the likely cause a bit more ?

Try another ejector spring. You might want to compare your ejector to a known good one also - verify same length.

forward ejection is usually overfunction; bolt carrier velocity too high caused by too much gas or too little recoiling weight.

Check the gas port.

Go here and read the Armalite Tech Note 34.  It says it is about the AR-10, but applies to the AR-15 type rifles, too.

OK, by part swopping, I found the fault to lie on a weak ejector spring. I changed it and life is good now. Thanks for input.
