I sat down to analyze the problems in my AR. As a refresher, I had to use the FA to get the first round in a mag to seat and the bolt to close. (The mags used in this project are 30 round LaBelles). I pulled the charging handle back and let it go. The tip of the bullet was hung up just a shade too low to feed. I rocked the bottom of the mag forward and the round fed into the chamber, bolt fully closed. I tried this several more times, same result. How much "looseness" is normal in an AR mag well? The mags have a fair amount of play when locked in, in all directions (fwd, back, left, and right). This is a cast DPMS lower that I picked up second-hand in a private sale. Any thoughts before I resort to buying a new lower? Thanx. |

What is happening is the mag is sitting a tad low in the receiver, and you just want to bring the mag up a hair in the receiver to solve the problem. First thing to try is to give theMag catch one more turn to see if it will tighten up the mag and slightly raise it. If this does not work, then try a different bolt catch that has the catch lip a tad higher (mic a few and use the highest lipped one). Also, try a few different mags to make sure that the problem in not related to a single mag. As for the mag being able to slightly rock in the receiver well, you can't have your cake and eat it too. If the mag sits rock solid tight, then it will not drop free when you hit the mag release button. Fixed, thanks for the catch. |
I think he means the mag catch, push the release button in as far as you can with a screwdriver or other implement and turn the catch clockwise a turn or two. |
