Two issues: 1. I have to use the forward assist to finish closing the bolt with the first round off the top of the magazine. This is with everything from Orlites to LaBelles. Subsequent rounds feed fine. 2. After the last round the bolt does not stay open. I replaced the bolt latch/release with a new DPMS tactical latch and still have the same problem. The rifle is a 16" J&T kit on a DPMS cast lower. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx. |

I was talking about Brohawk's failure to lock on the first round from the magazine. Brohawk, Perform the short stroke check outline in the Checklist and see if the failure to hold open is related to gas troubles or bolt catch troubles. Are you using a slotted carrier? |

Im assuming 30 rounders with 30 rounds, is that correct? How are you releasing the bolt? Bolt locked open, bolt release hit? Or bolt closed, pulling-releasing charging handle? If the rifle is cycling properly when firing, but not when being cycled manually, I'm thinking there is a posibility it is how the bolt is being released. Also it might be a weak buffer spring, weak enough not to cycle manually, but just enough to get it when fired. Like Tweak said look at feed surfaces. In fact examine all the surfaces on the bolt, expe locking lugs, the bolt carrier, and the locking lugs in the reciever. Check for any improperly finished surfaces. Next, since you are having both first, last round issues, see if you can determine it the magazine catceh, and bolt latch are at the proper places. It almost sounds like the magazines are riding a little low. Just guessing. |
Could be as simple as the way you are charging the weapon, the upper bearing parts being rough/ new and not lubed, to as complex as the hammer binding up on the firing pin enough to slow the bolt speed to the point that it will not completely strip the round without the extra rebounding speed of the buffer against the back of the receiver extension on cycle.
First thing to check is if the bolt will lock by hand with an empty mag. Could be as simple as the buffer not allowing the bolt come far enough back to lock, hence the wrong buffer being used, or a butt stock screw protruding into the receiver extension cavity. Without going any father on checking other parts of the rifle, we need to know what ammo you are using in the rifle? I could go on about checking the carrier key for leakage, the hammer tail for binding against the disco, and even if you are using the correct buffer for your Buffy tube, but if it boils down to you using Wolf ammo, or some strange surplus/reload in a fresh/ tight chamber, the ammo would be the problem, and not other parts of the rifle. P.S. Don't clip any springs in your rifle. Lets resolve the problem instead of just slapping a band-aid on it. |
