Mellow greetings fellow ARFers. I have a problem with my AR15. I've read the FAQ, the List Rules, the Sample Post and the Glossary and couldn't find this exact problem. My AR15 is a DPMS lower with a Model 1 CAR 16" upper. The rifle has a .223 chamber and I'm shooting 5.56 mil-spec (yeah, I know). It went through 500 rounds of m193 without a hitch. I then replaced the tactical entry stock, tube, and buffer for an A2 stock, tube, and buffer. Now the bolt will not cycle. The gun will fire but it will not remove the empty case. Pulling gently on the charging handle removes the empty case (the case is not stuck). The spent cases do not have obvious scratch marks. I've tried different mil-spec ammo. I've thoroughly cleaned the chamber (I think) and the bolt and carrier. The gas rings passed a test I found on this site (they will support the bolt in the carrier). The new buffer is an HBAR style. The rifle has a total of 515 rounds through it. I suspect the new buffer but I don't have the old one (or any other) to try. Thanks. edited to show that problem has been solved |

Yes I also replaced the spring. I just got back from the range. I found someone willing to swap parts with me until we got my rifle to work. It ended up being the bolt carrier. My carrier looks fine but the rifle won't work with it. The carrier was new, purchased from Model 1. It has 515 rounds through it. Using my carrier with his bolt would not fix the problem (not a problem with rings). I've been scrubbing the inside of the carrier to see if it has a carbon build up. Does gas flow from the tube into the carrier or is the tube closed? Thanks. |
Gas flows through the gas tube, into and through the gas key, and is dumped inside the carrier, right behind the gas rings on the bolt. If you can't find anything obviously wrong with the carrier, removing, cleaning and reinstalling the gas key might help. |
Thanks, that's my problem. The gas key is clogged. I've been scared to remove the gas key because the screws that hold it in are "mashed" like the manufacturer did not want it removed. I figured there might be alignment issues. |
Are you sure? Could be you had a hot round that dislodged the primer during extraction. Don't forget to monitor your primers closely for overpressure signts when running 5.56 in a .223 chamber! Edited to add quote. |
