| My buddy has a Colt match target AR15. It has problems with the spent shell getting stuck in the chamber. The bolt never opens after the shot. It sometimes takes quite a bit of force to get it open. It has done this since new. We have tried different magazines, different lowers, and different ammo with no luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. He spent a lot of money on this rifle and it has never has worked right. Thanks |

If the shell always sticks, and it requires a lot of force to open manually afterwards, then there is something wrong with the chamber. -reamed to the wrong size -scored, galled or otherwise mechanically damaged -pitted or corroded -extremely dirty -chrome plating misapplied or just plain rough Look at a couple of cases that have been extracted from the chamber after firing. You might be able to see some scratches or other indications of where it is interfering with the chamber. The fix may involve cleaning, polishing, reaming or replacing, depending on what is wrong. |

It may also be possible the rifle is experiencing short recoil issues and rechambering the expanded fired case, which can make manual extraction quite difficult. Had the same problem on a FAL before I got the gas adjustment thing worked out. I would first check the chamber though to make sure it doesn't look rough, check the FAQ for more info. If it is a short recoil issue, the FAQ also has more info you help you diagnose the problem. You could try Colt customer service, the rifle does have a warranty, may be a lost cause but is worth checking out none the less. |
