Has anyone seen the J pin fail?  At the range today my hammer pin almost fell out!  I decided to call it quits and return home for troubleshooting.  I removed the pin with the tip of a pen, effortlessly and pulled the hammer out.  The J pin is not visible when I look through the hammer pin hole.  Has anyone else had a hammer fail like this?

Heck, just put a dab of JB Weld in the spring-hole a ways, then tap the J-spring back in there; works every time I've tried. WECSOG to the rescue!

You mean the little spring that keeps the pin in place? They are not held in there all that well, I suppose that one could come loose once in a while. If you can find the spring, glue it back in and be happy. Or by a new hammer.

Oddly enough, the last pre-ban AR I bought had this exact failure.  I had just bought an AR-18 (not the 180) and the pins regularly walked out.  One day I noticed my hammer pin of my Eagle Arms lower walking out.

Lo and Behold, a fuct J-pin.  I ordered a fresh hammer from ArmaLite instead of fixing it.

My M16 had a similar failure.  The internals that it came with looked like the best quality asian sweatshop stuff available and I replace them all right after that failure.

It doesn't seem like a weak link in the design but it's happened to me twice in two years.  Now I'm using the KNS non-rotating pins and this is not a worry.

Thanks guys.  I went ahead and ordered a new hammer.  The lady on the phone said that it happens, not very often but it happens.  Oh well.

J_E_D, where is Va are you?

I'm in Tyson's Crowded Corner.  I regularly go the rrpc.org range since I used to live in Charlottesville and retained my membership.
