My son (who's in another state) called and said
he's having problems with a used Bushmaster AR
that he's considering buying. It's a pre-ban factory shorty, collapsing stock and 11.5 bbl with permanently attached long flashider. The gun has very week ejection (plops them out about a foot or so)and the bolt doesn't always come back far enough to strip a new round out of the mag. This happened with a variety of
GI and Orlite mags and a variety of factory FMJ 55 grain ammo. It sounds to me like a gas problem. He says the carrier key was loose but the gun still malfunctioned after the key was
tightened.Opinions please.

Flame cutting may have marred the bottom (interface side) of the carrier key.

Using wet & dry Fine sandpaper, over a plate of glass or a mirror to ensure flatness, scrub the low spots in that key, around the gas tube hole, out of it. Do not go too far.

Restake the carrier key after degreasing it and using red loctite on both the flat bottom of the key and the flat top of the carrier (acts as a gasket to prevent gas leaks entirely), as well as on the screws themselves.

Heating with a mild flame for a few minutes will allow for disassembly later if needed.

I'd check your buffer spring length first, though...if it is the full-length spring in the carbine tube, that'll cause problems.

Change that to Blue loctite and you have a winning program.

If he uses red loctite and forgets to break the bound down with heat, he takes chances of shearing the bolts off in the carrier.  Think latter on in time, and if someone else wrenches on the rifle.
