I recently purchased a Colt preban r6601 match h-bar with a 20" barrel. The rest of the rifle functions perfectly. But the bolt catch has some major problems. I've taken the catch out, brass brush cleaned the pieces, and relubed it with Miltec. I put it all back together correctly according to the USMC manual. The bolt is supposed to catch on the front of the bolt carrier correct? Not the front of the bolt right? The bolt pulls back far enough so it "should" engage with the bolt carrier. I've done this by hand and it's a no-go. The catch rises as high as it can when engaged by a magazine or manually. The problem is it has a hard time sticking on the "shelf" of the bolt catch. There is very little horizontal play with the bolt catch. I'm worried that the bolt carrier might be damaged? If someone has a picture of the front of the bottom of the bolt carrier, that would be very helpful. The bolt catch doesn't look damaged or worn... If it has trouble holding the bolt back when I manually press the bolt catch, I don't think the problem is with the spring or the detent. Any thoughts? -Steve |

stevenb, The bolt catch on all of the AR's I have ever seen catches the front face of the bolt, not the carrier. With some fuss, I can get the carrier to hold on the bolt catch, but it is not supposed to do that. If the bolt carrier is catching instead of the bolt, installing a new loaded mag and pushing the bolt release would not feed a round... Will the carrier go back far enough to let the catch work on the bolt? The easiest pair of checks that the bolt catch is OK combined with the gas system being OK: First Check - Close the rifle empty, insert and lock mag, pull charging handle fully to rear - The bolt should lock open; Second Check - Insert empty mag, lock bolt back, feed one round by hand, fire it, bolt should lock open. Does your rifle do these things? If yes, it is fine. What is the "problem"? |

Billski, Thanks a lot! I haven't had an AR in a while, so I wasn't sure where it locked to. So I looked at the rear screw again and took it out. It locked into place perfectly. So I cut off half an inch from the screw, and popped it back in. Works perfectly now! Thanks a lot, that was really bugging me! -Steve |
