My fairly new (less than 500 rounds) Bushmaster M4 started short stoking on Sunday at the FDCC match in Lake City. Damn thing ruined my time and then I let it ruin my mind set. Anyway, I checked it out and found that a carrier key screw has come lose. The other one is tight and the key appeared to be tight, so I checked it by spraying some WD-40 around the seam of the key and used a small rubber hose to blow air into the key. Sure enough I got bubbles from the front of the key. So I have four questions about fixing it because I don't want to send this thing back to have it fixed. #1 I cant remember what the key should be torqued to? #2 I know it is in in/lb but where do you buy a torque wrench in in/lb? Would a auto repair mechanic have one in his shop? #3 What is the proper way to stake the screw? #4 While I am at it anything else I should check in the gas system? Thanks for the help, Rob |

Do yourself a favor - start with new screws. The TM covers all of this and lots more. It is on this site somewhere and there are lots of vendors for bound copies. Get TM, get screws, disassemble, clean, reassemble, torque, stake. Torque wrenches cal'd in in-oz and in-lb are available from many good tool sources. I like the aircraft tool shops. I'll post some names tomorrow if someone else doesn't beat me to it, but a quick internet search should turn up one, and www.zediker.com had some too. I hope that the whole problem is in that loose screw! |
