[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 416R SS

Been looking for a 50 Beowulf/12.7x42 barrel in 4150 nitride, but can only find them in 416R Stainless and I believe Saturn makes all the ones I have seen. Give me lesson on 416r and it's durability. I prefer 4150 but can't seem to find one. I always hear guys talk about shooting out SS rather quickly don't know how often it actually happens. So please share your brain.

call a barrel company and see if they recommend stainless for a 220 swift still.
At least back in the 80s varminters were going to stainless because it was more resistant to heat and pressure erosion than what was available in carbon back then.

I in no way doubt you, but why all the talk about SS barrels being shot out in low round counts? Is that just in full auto apps, high velocity, or does it even apply to a big bore lower velocity ar tossing big heavies?

Unless you are doing mag dumps all the time, you are not going to have a problem with SS barrels I have a couple of guns with SS on them and I shoot normally through them and not showing any signs of them shooting out.

Yes I guess if I can afford to shoot one out I can afford a new barrel right! When I plan a project I always get up tight about these kinda details plus I have never owned a SS rifle barrel just hand guns.

Looks like most the barrels for the Beowulf I see seem to be made by Saturn. Any experience with Saturn?
