So I recently purchased some 3D solid model downloads from RifleConnection.com today since all the downloads are only $5 today and am going to attempt designing and machining my own lower from 0%. I was wondering if anyone here has done this from design concept to final production in real materials and have any pointers?

Here is the link to the 3D models for only $5

Thanks for posting that - I'm considering getting models for the 1911 - but I need to figure out which 3d format to choose - want to convert to other formats, including for 3d printing, making modifications in other programs, etc.

Not sure what format would be best for that. Any suggestions?

I guess that STEP files were designed to be a non-proprietary format, suitable for interchange, and maybe that is what I should get (but I guess that there are converters for SLDPRT, at least, into other formats). I went through some elementary Solidworks training three or four years ago, but have forgotten most if it - I may have access to Solidworks through a local library, but it's not quite the same as having software that you can use at home.

Now that I've given it some more thought, I'll probably work with the files in Autodesk Fusion 360 - I can open STEP files directly, or convert SLDPRT files - so it's probably better for me to go with the STEP files.
