Here is my original post from another forum. Since this was posted I have purchased and received a BCM blem M4 and put it together with the packaged FA and a Strike Industries enhanced door. I also purchased a lightly used Midwest Industries 15" G2 SS handguard. The Original post:
"I've been collecting parts for a "precision" AR build and am, as always, seeking advice from those that are more knowledgeable than myself. Most of my questions are centered around the upper. The lower is built and done. I have a forged Aero, Timney Targa 2-Stage trigger, and a Magpul 404 MOE stock as the basics. Rifle's use will be prone and bench shooting to 300 for the majority of its life with some shooting to 700 if/when I get the chance. First up: How much of a difference would a billet upper make over a forged? I understand that the billet is stiffer but does that make so much of a difference? Additionally, is it worth it to "face" the upper and should I look to "bed" the barrel into the receiver and how much of a difference would that make" So, along with the question of facing and bedding the upper, which has been discussed ad nauseum here and elsewhere I have some questions regarding barrels. I'll be going with an 18-20" in a 7 or 8 twist. What is the difference between a DMR, an SPR, and a "Hanson"? Is there any practical difference in accuracy over 10-20 round strings of somewhat rapid fire? I'm not talking mag dumps, but for sure not a lot of rest between rounds for 10-20, then a good cool down. What about weight? This will be a bagged/bench/prone shooter for slightly longer ranges so it's not vital to have a light weight rig but I'd like to be able to move it, you know? Should I be looking for a target crown or is a muzzle break acceptable for accuracy at longer ranges? Thanks in advance. |

The BCM uppers that I have received have been very tight, so bedding not needed.
If the face of the upper is not square or has a high spot then lapping may be beneficial, but don’t get carried away. If you are going to rapid fire strings then a heavy barrel should be beneficial. There are a variety of MOA or better capable rifles out there with muzzle devices. |
