Hello,
I recently built a 16" AR with a spikes barrel and gas block. The barrel is predrilled for the pin, my only problem is getting the pin driven all the way in. I have used every technique I can come up with. My biggest problem is finding a way to stabilie the gas block in order to strike the pin hard enough to drive it the rest of the way into the gas block. It's about half way in now. Any suggestions or tips to solidly hold the gas block so it's not moving around? The shape of the gas block makes it extremely hard to keep it stable. Thanks! |

There are some blocks made just for that operation. They support the shape of the gas block. But to be honest, in all that I have tried I have never had a problem and have never needed that block.
Now, I have seen people try to drive that tapered pin in the wrong direction and it would not go in all the way but I am sure that is not your problem, right? |
| I prop the barrel and gas block on pieces of wood to keep them steady, the use a needle nose pliers to align the gas tube pin. The pliers works the same way as starting a nail with your fingers. Make sure you have a good grip, or you'll launch the pin. Maybe a bit of duct tape in the jaws would help with the grip. Then I tap it in with a tack hammer (hammer with small head.) |

I'm guessing you're working on a small gas block and it just keeps rolling away?
You'll need to find something to support the thinner portion of the gas block, as well as the larger portion. If not, it will kind of walk away on you. Just set it securely and drive the roll pin home. Use an appropriately sized roll pin punch and a hammer. Most of the ones that I have done go together fairly stubbornly. No way I'd have been able to just tap them in with a tack hammer. I've always had to use a small ball peen and a punch. Also, if it's really being pain, there is a chance that the end of the roll pin got a little mushroomed, and won't start through the opposite side. One good hit with the correct support should get it moving, but you may have to take it back out and clean up the end a little. |
